It is important that even children have eye checkups to make sure that they have no eye disorders or diseases, and to be sure that they are able to see clearly. Many children have problems seeing the blackboard at school, or reading, but they do not think to mention this problem to their parents. Children with eye problems often have problems with schoolwork and may even develop behavioral problems as a result. If you would like to have your child examined for pediatric vision problems, make an appointment for your child to receive Bernards NJ eye care at our fine practice, Somerset Hills Eye Care Center.

At Somerset Hills Eye Care our expert and experienced ophthalmologist is Dr. Timothy P. Sullivan. He has been providing exemplary eye care for all members of the family for over 30 years. When a child comes in for a comprehensive eye exam Dr. Sullivan will screen for many common pediatric vision problem. Some of the most common vision problems in children are amblyopia, congenital cataracts, strabismus and nearsightedness.

When your child comes to Somerset Hills Eye Care Center, he or she will be able to be expertly treated by our doctor should any problems be discovered. During Bernards NJ eye care there may be a diagnosis of amblyopia. Amblyopia is commonly called “lazy eye.” In this condition vision is lost when the brain does not fully recognize the images seen by the weaker eye. This condition may be treated using an eye patch that is worn for several hours a day to force the brain’s recognition of the weaker eye. Congenital cataracts can be operated on, much in the way cataracts in adults are. However, treatment of this condition brings with it special concerns that you will need to discuss with our ophthalmologist. Strabismus is commonly known as “crossed-eyed.” In this common vision problem a patient cannot align both eyes at the same time. This problem must be treated by our ophthalmologist as it will not go away on its own. If you would like your child to meet with Dr. Sullivan for a complete pediatric eye exam, contact our office today.

In order to examine amblyopia, special techniques using mirrors have been developed that don’t place anything close to your child’s face. This considerate approach, and others like it, keep you and your children as comfortable and relaxed as possible. With another condition, strabismus, there is a misalignment caused when one or more of the six muscles that controls your child’s eyes stop working properly. Our Bernards eye doctor explains that this condition prevents your child’s eyes from working together, first causing vision impairment, improper depth perception, or double vision. Statistics show that strabismus occurs in two to five percent of all children and can cause vision loss in one eye, then yields to amblyopia if the base cause is not treated as early in childhood as possible.

With little to no discomfort, our Bernards eye doctor uses new techniques that makes diagnosing amblyopia much easier. There have been some remarkable advances in diagnosing amblyopia, including the latest computer-based test of depth perception that can be used with children as young as four months old. Stereo vision and depth perception testing is important in detecting diseases such as amblyopia and strabismus. There are many stereovision/depth perception tests on the market today, some geared especially for children and their special needs. Many of these tests have your child identifying the “raised” letter, shape or animal, in order to measure depth perception, helping to identify if your child’s eyes are working together properly. With your child’s best eye health and comfort in mind, our Bernards eye doctor uses the most up-to-date technology to help put your mind at ease.
