Eye Office in Bernardsville

If you are experiencing a problem with ptosis, you should visit our ophthalmology practice, Somerset Hills Eye Care Center for diagnosis and treatment. At our eye office in Bernardsville, our expert ophthalmologist, Dr. Timothy P. Sullivan, can provide you with complete diagnosis as well as treatment for ptosis.

When a patient has ptosis they have a drooping of an upper eyelid. This can occur in one or both eyes. Sometimes the droop is hardly noticeable. However, in other cases, the eyelid can fully descend over the entire pupil. Patients of all ages can be affected by ptosis. At times, a patient will have such a severe drooping of the eyelid that they have difficulty seeing. It may cause patients to tilt their head back so they can see under their eyelid, or they may try to raise their eyebrows to lift the eyelids. If you think you may have ptosis, the best thing to do is to compare a photo that was recently taken of you with a photo from a decade or two back. Our eye doctor at our eye office in Bernardsville will most likely be able to determine whether or not ptosis is the cause of your drooping eyelid problem. Ptosis can be present at birth, or can develop over time, or from an injury. Other times there may be a problem with the patient’s facial anatomy. Surgery may be the best treatment for drooping eyelids. During this surgery, the muscles that lift the eyebrows are tightened, and you will end up with an improved appearance as well as the ability to see better. There are also other surgical techniques which may be used. Children may need to have surgical treatment for ptosis if they have a moderate or severe case of this problem. When a young patient has ptosis, they can develop weakened vision in one eye which will unfortunately affect them for a lifetime.

If either you or your child are suffering from ptosis, we urge you to meet with our eye surgeon at our eye office in Bernardsville.
